What is CNG?
CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. Basically a fossil fuel, CNG is an excellent alternative for fuels like gasoline (commonly known as petrol), diesel and LPG. CNG is formed after natural gas undergoes the process of compression at standard atmospheric pressure, to about 0.5 percent of its actual quantity. It is clear in colour, non-corrosive and odourless.
What are the benefits of installing a CNG kit in your vehicle?
Natural gas is produced both worldwide and domestically, that too at a considerably lower cost as compared to petrol or diesel. With the cost of CNG being almost a third of the cost of petrol, you enjoy considerable amount of savings on your monthly fuel expenses. With this benefit, your investment for converting your vehicle will be recovered in form of savings.
Though combustion of CNG results into green house gasses, it still remains a better and environment friendly alternative as compared with other fuels. CNG powered vehicles result into reduction of ozone-forming emissions.
How safe is CNG in case of accidents?
CNG, when used as a fuel for your vehicle, is basically stored in a kit, which consist of a cylinder that essentially meets the safety requirements. Further, the kits are sealed properly and quality checked, leaving no chances of leakage or spills. In worst case scenario, if leakage occurs in the fuel system, CNG dissipates up into the atmosphere due to its light weight, unlike petrol, which spreads on the surface, leading to a fire hazard and untoward incidents. CNG is definitely a safer fuel as compared to gasoline.
What is LPG?
LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. LPG is a mixture of propane and butane when used in form of fuel for vehicles. It is a popular alternative fuel for vehicles. LPG is a very clean and green gas, which is increasingly used in various ways in an effort to reduce the pollution.
What are the "things to be considered" before getting a CNG/LPG kit installed in my vehicle?
  • The first and foremost thing is ensuring whether the workshop from where you are getting this done is authorised by the government.
  • It is essential to check whether the workshop works in line with the safety guidelines for kit installation.
  • Moreover, the kit, including the cylinder that is going to be installed, must be a government approved CNG/LPG kit. Any modifications in the engine related to this, need to be performed at an authorized workshop only.
  • Don't fall for cheap advertisement/ promotional tricks and get a CNG/LPG kit installed in a hurry. Further, follow proper pre-installation procedure, which includes RTO approvals, etc.
What is the average percentage fuel cost savings while using CNG/LPG, as compared to petrol?
A CNG powered vehicle usually reduces your running cost on petrol by 60%. LPG powered vehicle usually reduces your fuel expenses by 30% as compared to petrol.
If I install a CNG/LPG Kit, can my vehicle still run on petrol?

Do you need to follow any specific servicing and maintenance for CNG/LPG fitted cars?
Periodic servicing of such vehicles, as recommended by the fitment centre is essential. Make sure that you follow the servicing routine recommended by your CNG/LPG fitment centre. Also, after each servicing routine, the engine must be tuned on to CNG mode.
CNG tuning is done free of cost for a period of 1 year from date of installation (if CNG retrofitment done at Eco Drive CNG Works) or 25000 kilometres whichever is earlier.
Is it true that an LPG vehicle can run on CNG?

Do CNG/LPG vehicles need PUC? If yes, is the regular PUC valid for such vehicles?
Yes, having a PUC is a must. You need have different type of PUC for CNG and LPG vehicles.
Which factors affect the fuel efficiency of a CNG powered vehicle? How we can improve the fuel efficiency?
Air filter is one part which plays a major role in overall fuel efficiency of the vehicle. If the frequency of driving car in dusty areas is high, the life of air filter will automatically reduce. Hence, it is essential to get the air filter element cleaned regularly. Further, the same must be replaced at every 10000 kilometres. The spark plugs also need to be replaced every six months.
Can I install CNG kit in my brand new car?
Yes of course! You can get a CNG/LPG kit fitted in your brand new car.
Can old petrol cars go for CNG/LPG Kits?
For old cars which have run 50000 kilometres and above, we strongly recommend a thorough vehicle engine check-up at a good service station. After this checkup, the mechanic will help you decide whether converting to CNG/LPG is a good idea or not.
Can CNG harm my engine?
This is still remains a debatable topic. While petrol is a wet fuel, CNG is a dry fuel; hence, the same can harm the engine in long run. But to extend the life of engine, and ensure better performance, it is always recommended to use petrol occasionally. This helps lubricate the carburettor, apart from increasing the engine efficiency. Also, with that "economic factor", CNG offers considerable amount of savings, which recovers the investment done for converting your vehicle into CNG. Moreover, today you can find almost all leading car manufacturers rolling out CNG variants of the new models. Considering this and the fact that CNG is a good fuel alternative for petrol, you can definitely think of having the same for your vehicle. Think. Decide!
